Prepping your home for holiday visitors

General

The holidays are fast approaching, and plans are falling into place. If you’re hosting out-of-town guests, you’re probably busy getting ready to play host. Putting up the decorations is only half the battle. Here are four steps to help you prep your home for holiday visitors.

Address minor repairs

Now is the time to fix that wobbly step on the porch and replace the baseboard that came loose during your kid’s birthday party. While you may know to avoid these trouble spots, you don’t want your guests to accidentally trip and fall. As you put up decorations, look for any little outstanding problems and have them repaired in time for company.

Clean from top to bottom

Nothing is more welcoming than a clean house, and your decorations will stand out more with an uncluttered backdrop. Wipe down the windows, dust the tops of doorframes and polish the wood furniture. As you clean, vacuum upholstered furniture to rid it of any pet hair or lingering dust. Bathrooms will definitely get a lot of use, so make sure you scrub the sinks, toilets and tubs until they sparkle.

Spruce up every room

The bulk of your holiday decorations may be in the living room, but don’t neglect the other areas. Put clean seasonal hand towels in the bathrooms along with scented candles. Dress up the kitchen with a few small accents. Use wreath hangars on doors throughout the house to hang decorations such as stockings, wreaths or other items. This creates a festive atmosphere, helping your guests get into the holiday spirit.

Put out the welcome mat

Pay a little more attention to the entryway when you’re expecting company. Sweep the porch, wipe down the door and make sure you have new bulbs in the porch lights. This will be where your guests form their first impression, so it’s important to give this area some TLC.

When you’re preparing for a holiday gathering at your home, follow these basic tips to ensure you’re ready for company. Getting your home in order and creating a festive atmosphere helps your guests feel welcome. Your home will look great, and you’ll take comfort in all the preparation you did, freeing you to sit back and spend time with your loved ones.
