Fall and winter lawn preparation

Fall and winter lawn preparation

General

If you want to keep your lawn looking great, then you’ll want to make sure to prepare it for the fall and winter weather. Contrary to what many people believe, fall and winter lawn preparation does not have to be time-consuming or difficult. There are several simple things that you can do to keep your yard healthy during the cooler seasons.

Rake your leaves

Most homeowners rake leaves, but many of them do not understand how important this task is. Leaves smother your grass, and if you leave them in your yard, you may not have any grass when spring comes. If you have a flower bed, you may want to consider saving some leaves and putting them there to help prevent weeds from growing in the yard.

Keep your lawn clean

In addition to raking your leaves, you also want to make sure that you clean your yard, removing rocks, logs and other objects from the grass.

Cut your grass

You will need to cut the grass a couple of times before the cold winter weather comes. Most homeowners cut their grass twice in October and once in November. When you do mow, cut the grass as short as possible. Mice and other critters look for warmth in your grass during the winter months, and they can destroy your lawn. Keeping your grass short helps keep them away.

Fertilize your grass

The late fall or early winter is the best time to fertilize. You want to fertilize your lawn before the weather freezes. The fertilizer will remain on the ground all winter long and keep the roots of the lawn fed. If you fertilize, your lawn will be fresh and lush when spring comes around.

The fall and winter months are no time to neglect your yard. Taking care of your lawn during the winter months is the key to having a healthy lawn in the spring. Mowing, cleaning, raking leaves and fertilizing are the keys to taking care of your lawn during the colder months.
