Decluttering your home for good

General

If you’ve looked around your house lately and wondered how you even walk around without tripping, it is time to consider a strategy for decluttering your home. As years pass, you tend to accumulate things—from your children’s best report card to your favorite magazines. However, this clutter can become overwhelming, creating a visual mess that can actually cause stress in the household. Remove this clutter for good with these simple organizational tips.

Rent a Storage Unit

When you truly have a lot of keepsake items but not enough space, consider renting a storage unit. Look through your home and pinpoint the things you cannot part with but don’t need at arm’s length, such as baby mementos and tax returns. Pack these items in a sturdy box and clearly label it with the contents. You can easily recover several square feet of space with this strategy.

Get Organized

Throw an organization party by inviting friends and family to pitch in. Stack plastic bins in the living room, and allow everyone to organize items into these containers. Stow magazines in one bin and use another for old knickknacks. Find space in the attic, under beds or in corners to store your precious items and clean up fast.

Pretend to Move

Many of your items may not be usable anymore, but you just can’t bear to see them go. Give your home—and mind—a reset by pretending to move. Create trash boxes and “keep” boxes. Invite friends and family over again to simply clean house. You’ll find that may be willing to part with more than you think.

Motivate with Money

Allow money to be your motivation by cleaning house to hold a garage or yard sale. Place these funds toward a family vacation or other large purchase. You may have items you don’t need but that buyers would pay good money for. Go through your home and pull things for sale. Even inexpensive items can be grouped in a bin and sold in bulk. Advertise your sale as soon as possible to complete the clutter cleanup.

Creating a minimalist interior takes effort. Remove clutter from each room, and ask a trusted friend for their opinion on particular items. They can give you an unbiased opinion about its value and whether it’s worth selling, tossing or saving. Try to look at your home from a different point of view to truly rid it of clutter. Filling the home with friends and family is a better alternative to scores of items strewn across the living room.
