Greet Spring With Green Grass: 5 Tips for Repairing Lawns After Winter

Lawn & Garden

Did you know that maintaining your lawn and grass can actually boost your property value by 15 to 20 percent? The key here is to keep your grass green and healthy.

After all, there aren’t too many people who are going to want to purchase a home with brown, dead grass.

However, even if you aren’t selling, ensuring your grass remains healthy and green can help to improve curb appeal while just making your lawn more pleasant to spend time in.

After the punishing temperatures and weather seen during the winter months, your grass may need a bit of help to be restored to its former, green glory. If that’s the case, then make sure repairing lawns is easy by using the tips found here.

1. Detach and Remove Any Debris

The first step to get your lawn restored for warmer weather is to weed, rake, and detach anything in your lawn that shouldn’t be there. It’s imperative that you clear out any and all debris present.

2. Make Sure the Ground is Level

After clearing off the lawn, search for any indentations, holes, and divots in the ground. Make sure you even these out with a shovel so your lawn is level.

By doing this, you can prevent drainage problems after it rains. This will also make mowing the lawn a bit easier.

3. Test Your Soil and Fertilize It

It’s a good idea to test the soil to discover if there are any deficiencies in the pH levels. Purchase a fertilizer mix based on the needs of your soil.

It’s a good idea to apply this to the lawn during the growing season.

4. Aerate

Is your soil overly compacted? If so, it’s a good idea to aerate it. You can rent an aerator to puncture holes in the ground.

By doing this, you can let the roots of your grass access the sun, water, light and the nutrients provided by the fertilizer.

5. Mow Your Grass

It’s a good idea to go ahead and mow your lawn but set the deck high. It’s not a good idea to chop off over a third of the grass blade.

Some of the benefits offered by mowing high are that it can:

  • Allow your grass to develop a deeper root system
  • Help to crowd out any weeds
  • Improve the resiliency of your lawn
  • Reduce its vulnerability to disease and pests

After mowing, don’t bag the clippings. They should be left on the ground as they will serve as mulch that can return the nutrients back into the lawn.
