Repurposing ideas for an empty bedroom

General

Sending a child off to college can be both exhilarating and very bittersweet all at the same time. Parents often feel an enormous sense of satisfaction at seeing a child do well academically and move on to the next phase of their lives. At the same time, a mother or father may feel very sad that their child has left home and will no longer live with them all year round.

An empty teenager’s room can serve as a source of even more melancholy. Help combat this feeling and increase your living space with these repurposing ideas for your child’s empty bedroom.

An extra bedroom can assume many roles. Think carefully before you begin the process. Consider the number of windows and doors in the room. Count the number of closets as well as how close the room is to another bedroom and a bathroom. A larger room can be used that can accommodate more people will have more potential uses than a smaller room with limited space.

Think as well about your current family’s needs as well as your own interests. If you have hobbies, then a small and cozy room can be an ideal place for them. Crafters who like to make quilts and create scrapbooks can easily turn a spare room into their own personal crafting haven. Put up shelves to store all your supplies and have them within reach. Put your sewing machine in one corner and your favorite design books in the other.

A spare bedroom can also be used for other purposes. If you have large piles of books and nowhere to put them, turn the room into a library. Install elegant bookshelves along the walls of the room, add an overstuffed sofa and two or three comfy chairs. With the right lighting you can use your retreat to enter your favorite literary worlds.

If you have a more technological bent and a larger room, create a home theater. A very large television and speaker system will bring movies to life. Devote a part of the room to media where you can charge an iPod and keep all your electronic accessories in a single space.

In any room, you might consider leaving space for your new college student to sleep when he or she returns for breaks. A small pull-out sofa bed can be ideal for this purpose.

With the right planning, an extra bedroom can serve as both a source of pleasant old memories and joyous new ones.
