How To Open A Garage Door Manually

Anything that comes with moving parts is prone to malfunction at some point; the same can also be said for an automatic garage door opener. While the convenience of having a massive garage door open and close with the simple press of a button is nice, it can be very inconvenient to suddenly face a malfunction with your remote. When this happens, it pays to know how to manually open your garage door until you can replace your remote with a working unit.

To manually open your garage, you will first need to open any latches or locks on the outside that otherwise keep the door shut. If you have a locked garage, the house will generally have the clasp side attached to it while the other side—where the locking mechanism goes—will attach to the garage itself. Undo this lock and then open the catch to free the door.

If you have any locks on the inside of the garage, you will need to undo these as well. Depending on the kind of garage you have, you might have some that slide on the bottom or the sides where the doors track up and down. Having these locked will keep the door in its position, so make sure to keep them wide open.

If you have a mechanical opener for your garage door, then you can pull on the string that unhooks the slider and screw. This is the assembly that allows the door to rise open or shut closed. By disconnecting the screw and the slider, you can freely move the door along the track as you wish since it no longer has a connection to the motor.

Look at your door carefully to see how it is supposed to open. Some roll up with ease, but others need to be pushed to swing upwards. Watch the video for more tips on how to open a garage door manually!
